For pilgrims who choose it, the Jeddah Airport to Madinah transfer is the first major ground journey of their trip, covering 420 km of Saudi highway to arrive at one of the most sacred cities in the world.

Is it permissible to visit Madinah before Makkah for Umrah?
Yes. Visiting Madinah is not a pillar of Umrah — it is a deeply recommended act of worship and a gift for every Muslim who can make it. There is no obligation to perform Umrah in a specific city order. Many pilgrims, particularly those who have performed Umrah before and now plan their time carefully, choose to spend their first days in Madinah at Masjid al-Nabawi — praying in Al-Rawdah al-Sharifah, visiting Jannat al-Baqi, Masjid Quba, Mount Uhud, and the other sacred sites — before travelling to Makkah for Tawaf and Sa'i.
The practical advantage of flying into Jeddah and travelling to Madinah first, rather than flying directly into Madinah Airport (MED), is that many international airlines offer direct flights to Jeddah but not to Madinah. For pilgrims from the UK, USA, Canada, and Australia, Jeddah is often the only direct-flight option.
The drive from King Abdulaziz International Airport to Madinah Al-Munawwarah covers approximately 420 km. The primary highway is the same Haramain Expressway corridor that connects Jeddah, Makkah, and Madinah — one of Saudi Arabia's best-maintained intercity roads.
Journey time: 4 to 5 hours door-to-door under normal traffic conditions. During Ramadan evenings and Friday afternoons, allow 5 to 5.5 hours. The route heads northeast from Jeddah, bypasses the Makkah boundary (pilgrims in a state of Ihram travelling to Makkah would be routed differently — but Jeddah-to-Madinah travellers are not entering Makkah and are not subject to the Miqat obligation on this leg), and continues through the open Hejaz terrain toward Madinah.
No Miqat obligation on this route. Pilgrims travelling from Jeddah directly to Madinah are not intending to perform Umrah immediately — they will perform it when they travel from Madinah to Makkah later. The Miqat stop at Masjid Dhul Hulayfah (Bir Ali) occurs on the Madinah to Makkah leg, not this one.
